Steven Green

Listen to Steven in his own words:

  • PausePlay Today: “I try to build and contribute.”
  • PausePlay Crime: “I should have made better decisions way earlier.”
  • PausePlay Life Without Parole: “I had no idea what it was.”
  • PausePlay Turning Point: “I’m not going to be this guy anymore.”

Steven Green is a student at the University of California, Irvine, where he is earning his Ph.D. degree in criminology, law and society. Steven is committed to community service and spends his free time mentoring people who are incarcerated, volunteering at food banks, and donating blood regularly to the American Red Cross. Prior to leaving prison, he earned six associate degrees and founded a sports-based program that raised over $55,000 in scholarship funds for youth.

He was 18 years old when convicted of murder and sentenced to life in prison with no parole. He attributes his personal transformation to deep self-reflection, the maturity that comes with age, and his religion.

While in prison, he worked hard to better himself and his community even though he had no possibility for release. In 2018, the California governor recognized his work and commuted his sentence. Steven was granted parole the following year. He spent 28 years in prison.

As a leader, he adheres to the advice of Jack Welch: “Before you are a leader, success is all about growing yourself. When you become a leader, success is all about growing others.”
